Luz del Sur

MUSAKE RECORDS PRESENTS

Luz del Sur

“I make Tejano music about the things we don’t want to forget.”

A South Texas Tejano singer carrying family stories forward through music.

HER STORY

Songs are another way families remember.

Luz was born and raised in Robstown, Texas, in a family where music was part of everyday life. Her father played bajo sexto in a local conjunto band at weddings, quinceañeras and community celebrations around Nueces County.

Her grandmother was the emotional center of the family. During difficult times she would say, “Todavía hay luz del sur”—there is still light from the south. For Luz, the phrase came to mean that home, family and faith can carry a person through darkness.

After her grandmother died, Luz adopted Luz del Sur as her stage name. The name is not inherited literally; the light is. Her music became a promise to carry that light forward.

START HERE

Three songs. Three ways into Luz’s world.

01

Todavía Hay Luz

Begin with Abuela. The album’s recurring accordion motif becomes the voice of memory and the light Luz was taught to carry.

02

Sábado en el Salón

Then meet her community. A joyful South Texas dance-hall cumbia filled with accordion, horns, movement and Saturday-night life.

03

Bajo Sexto y Corazón

Then meet Papá. The bajo sexto becomes the emotional voice of musical inheritance passed from one generation to the next.

Bajo las Estrellas del Sur

FEATURED MUSICAL KEEPSAKE

Bajo las Estrellas del Sur

Ten songs framed as a year in the life around a Robstown dance hall—quinceañeras, first love, Saturday-night dancing, Sunday-morning reflection, heartbreak, leaving, homecoming and rediscovered love.

The journey begins with Abuela’s light and ends with Luz realizing that the light she inherited is now hers to carry forward.
